IoT telematics for the mine · in operation since 2020

See where your machines and crews are, live.

Smartek Digital Mining captures more than 40 parameters continuously, with no operator input, so you can supervise a site remotely and decide on facts.

What we do

Field data, collected by connected devices.

A mine is a remote site where the smallest driving error can cause an injury or a loss. We fit machines with devices that record the data that matters and report any abnormal condition at once.

Our value lies in the data we collect and in our ability to analyse it and turn it into information and action. You move from buying a product to buying a service, and from capital to operating expenditure.

Five layers, one service

  1. Device hardware
  2. Device software
  3. Communications
  4. Cloud platform
  5. Cloud applications

We supply the hardware, host the data, train the users and can run the service for you.

Three outcomes

What the system changes on your site

A more productive fleet

Loading, hauling and return times measured for each truck between the loading zone and the dump. The aim: move the highest payload per hour at the lowest operating cost.

Safer drivers and machines

Speed, driving behaviour and authorised zones monitored continuously. Abnormal conditions raise an alert at once.

Complete data, with no input

Every status change and time record is determined and logged automatically: no human error, consistent data and better acceptance by operations teams.

The software

Five views to run the fleet

Trucks

List of all trucks with trips made and distance driven, by day and by month. For each truck: identification, the day’s activity with time and duration at each checkpoint, and charts against the fleet average.

Wheel loaders and light vehicles

The same reading for wheel loaders and light vehicles: distance for the day and the month, activity at checkpoints, comparison with the average.

Stops

Every stop longer than one minute, by truck: date, start and end, duration, position on the map. An overall map shows where the fleet stops.

Live map

Every machine on one map. Green: moving. Red: stopped or idling. Black: disconnected (maintenance or breakdown). One click gives name, category, speed, trips and kilometres for the day.

History

Replay the route of any machine: choose its tag number, the date and the time range. The route plays back on the map, with adjustable zoom and speed.

Reports

Machine utilisation, production cycles and distances travelled, from data recorded without operator input.

Fleet management

Functions chosen to fit your goals.

Telematics gives full visibility of fleet operations. We select with you the functions your site needs.

Where GPS does not reach, we track assets and personnel with beacons suited to confined spaces.

On site

The equipment we use

Five elements connect the machine to the management screen.

GPS unit bolted to the chassis of a haul truck
GPS and IoT unit fitted to a haul truck at the mine gate.

01 · On every machine

Rugged GPS tracker

Bolted to the chassis, the unit reads the machine’s position, speed, direction and status. It transmits by satellite or mobile network and stores data when coverage drops. It works on any brand of machine.

Geofence beacon fixed to a post, haul truck in the background
Sealed beacon fixed to a post at a logistics checkpoint.

02 · At checkpoints

Geofence beacon

Installed at passage points (pit exit, stockpile, gate), the beacon detects each equipped machine and timestamps its passage. These readings give cycle times and the time spent at each checkpoint. The same beacon reads personnel badges for attendance.

03 · At the scale

Weighbridge integration

An integration unit links each weighing to the truck’s identity and its trip. Tonnage is recorded with the time and the vehicle, with no re-keying, and feeds the production reports.

Satellite antenna at a mine entrance, haul trucks passing the gate
Satellite antenna and communications cabinet at a mine entrance.

04 · At the site gate

VSAT satellite link

On sites without reliable mobile coverage, a VSAT antenna carries the data up to the cloud platform. Devices transmit as soon as the link is available.

Rugged laptop showing a convoy tracking map and indicators

05 · In the office

Logistics dashboard

On a computer or a rugged tablet, management follows convoys on the map, the status of each load and the production and transport indicators, from site to delivery point.

Use case

Attendance on a mining drill site

In operation A mining contractor in Mali · since 2020

The problem

Crews logged hours on paper timesheets sent to the office for pay and bonuses: errors, fraud, excessive hours, no reliable check on actual crew size, and a risk of paying for hours not worked.

The solution

Each truck carries a GPS unit that acts as a beacon and geolocates the drill site. Employees carry badges read continuously: arrival, presence and effective working time are recorded and available at once on the platform.

The gains

  • Lower unjustified wage costs
  • Better crew monitoring
  • Automatic entry of working hours
  • Simpler payroll

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which machines can Smartek Digital Mining track?

Light vehicles, haulage trucks, haul trucks, wheel loaders and site machines of any brand, through a connected unit fitted to the machine.

Does it work with limited connectivity?

Yes. Data is buffered and sent as soon as the network is available; the system was designed for remote sites.

Does the operator have to enter anything?

No. In a haul cycle, all data is gathered by the system with no input from the truck driver or the shovel operator.

How long has the system been in operation?

Since 2020, with a mining contractor in Mali.

How is personnel data protected?

Under our signed data-protection policy: controlled access, secure hosting and use limited to the purposes agreed with you.

How long does a pilot take?

The duration is set with you according to the number of machines or crews and the indicators to track.
